Obituary Condolences

NORTH BENNINGTON -- Leslie H. “Tom” Aiken, 84, a former resident of Route 67A, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Crescent Manor Care Centers following a brief illness.

Born in Fletcher, Jan. 14, 1921, he was the son of the late Homer and Alice (Taylor) Aiken. He received his education in the North Cambridge schools. Mr. Aiken was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion from Oct. 6, 1942, until Dec. 7, 1945.

He married the former Inez LaPlant on Feb. 25, 1946, in Cambridge. Mrs. Aiken died Oct. 18, 2003.

In earlier years, Mr. Aiken was employed by the Vermont Railway. He later worked for many years as a carpenter at the Bennington Display Company.

An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping on Lake Champlain. He also enjoyed puzzles, woodworking and playing horseshoes.

Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Harwood of Bennington, Shirley LaCross of South Carolina and Kuloa Grover of North Bennington; two sons, David “Jack” LaPlant of North Bennington and Leslie H. Aiken of Pownal; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Buick of East Fairfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery in Fletcher, where committal services will be held Friday, Jan. 6, 2005, at 12 p.m.
