Lester "Joe" Cooper 1940 - 2009 BENNINGTON Lester L. "Joe" Cooper, 68, of White Birches Park died Monday, May 18, 2009, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bennington on Dec. 19, 1940, son of the late Leonard C. and Thelma Surdam Cooper, Joe received his education in the local schools. He was a member of the Golf Team at Bennington High School that won the 1957 Vermont State Golf Championship. Joe resided in Shelton, Conn., for many years, where he was a self-employed carpenter. He retired in 2003 when he returned to Bennington. Joe was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1861 and VFW Post 1332. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed all sports. In addition to his faithful dog "Dusty," Joe leaves his siblings and their spouses, Doreen and William Bourdon of Bennington, Bruce and Lori Cooper of Dalton, Cheryl and Tom Eggsware of Bennington, Bonnie Cooper and her fiancé, Kevin Snow, of Bennington and Linda and Anthony Cook of Pownal, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: At Joe's request, private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
