Obituary Condolences

MANCHESTER -- More than 500 people attended funeral services for Lewie Dean on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at Burr and Burton Academy.

The Rev. Jordan Dickenson conducted the service. Those in attendance listened to a favorite song of Lewie’s, “Blue Eyes Crying in The Rain,” by Willie Nelson. The Rev. Dickenson offered scripture readings and invited those who wished to join in saying the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Family memories were shared by Lewie’s children, Molly, Jonathan and Peter. Steve Houghton, on behalf of Burr and Burton Academy, offered words of remembrance and accolades of Lewie’s coaching accomplishments.

Military honors were accorded by Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 under the direction of Commander Steve Leach. Flag bearers standing at the casket were Senior Vice Commander Wink Roberts and Adjutant Jim Johnson. The flag that draped the veteran’s casket was folded by Service Officer Steve Byrne and color guard member Tom Hayes and was presented to Lewie’s wife, Sally, by Byrne. The casket was escorted out of the gymnasium by Burr and Burton football players Eddie Perkins, Corey Ayott, Cameron Perham, Alan Faxon, Jeremy Devlin and Gary Coleman.

Interment was held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, in the family lot in Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester where the Rev. Dickinson offered burial rites and committal prayers. Serving as pall bearers were Peter and Jonathan Dean, John Cupatz, Justin Severence, Dave Keeler, Walt Miller and John Black.

Lewie Dean, a resident of Route 7A, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Arrangements were under the care of Brewster Funeral Service, 34 Park Place.
