BENNINGTON -- Lillian Hassan Batchelder, 96, of Peru, died on Monday, March 13, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

She was born July 4, 1909, in Stephentown, N.Y., the daughter of Boughton Hassan and Carrie Rose (Kettle) Hassan.

In 1925, she married Earle Hunt in Pittsfield, Mass. He predeceased her in 1955. In 1939 she married George Batchelder in Pownal, who also predeceased her.

Lillian worked as a waitress, chambermaid, midwife and home care provider. She drove a school bus in Peru for 23 years, retiring in 1962.

She was a member of the Ladies Aide in Peru and the Cpt. Maxsson Post 634 Legion Auxiliary in Cambridge, N.Y. She enjoyed puzzles, quilting, sewing and word searches.

She is survived by two daughters, Bette Gillett and her husband, David, of Sebring, Fla., and Rose Holcomb and her husband, Louis, of Cambridge; a son, James Hunt and his wife, Lorraine, of Manchester; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Batchelder, with whom she shared a home for the past 63 years; 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert; two daughters, Helen and Barbara; four grandsons, Russell Gillett, Mitchell Hunt, Clark Davis and Jim Robbins; three sisters, Hazel, Florence and Ruth: and two brothers, Henry and Bernie.

Services will be held at the United Church of Christ in Peru on Saturday, March 18, 2006, at noon. Friends may call on the family from 10 a.m. to noon before the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Londonderry Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 911, Londonderry, VT 05148.
