Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Lillian M. Gates, a lifelong resident of Pownal, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington after a lengthy illness.

Lillian was born in Pownal on Jan. 3, 1923, the daughter of Hugh and Lorena (Amadon) McIntire. She received her education in Pownal schools and attended Bennington High School.

Lillian married Charles Casper Gates at her home in Bennington on May 10, 1941. Mr. Gates died July 29, 2001.

Lillian was a magnificent cook and her culinary skills were admired by her family and friends.

She was a former member of the Bennington Grange, the 4-H Club and enjoyed going to Camp Ondawa, which was attended by many homemakers. She was a member of the Pownal Senior Citizens Center and American Legion Post No. 13 in Bennington.

Lillian is survived by her son, Randall Gates of Pownal; four daughters, Kathleen Stevens of Bennington, Susan Russell of Harlingen, Texas, and Phoenix, Janice Bushee of Pownal and Melinda Onorato of Williamstown, Mass.; her brother, Floyd McIntire of Bennington; two sisters, Helen O’Neil of Anaheim, Calif., and Phyllis Morse of Bennington; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sister-in-laws, Elsie Gates of Williamstown and Edna Richardson of Hancock, Mass.; her brother-in-law, Christopher Gates Sr. of Pownal; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son, Herbert Gates, who died in 1966, and her brother, Herbert McIntire.

Funeral services for Lillian will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington. Interment will be in the family lot in Towslee Cemetery in Pownal. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Monday, March 20, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
