READSBORO -- Mrs. Lillian Vanda Campbell Warner, 86, a former longtime resident of Tunnel Street in Readsboro, died Thursday morning, May 13, 2004 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a long illness.

Mrs. Warner was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on July 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Lillian (Carlson) Campbell. She grew up in Ardmore, Pa. where she graduated from Lower Merion High School. She married Frank D. Warner Jr. in Newtown Square, Pa. on May 3, 1937, Mr. Warner predeceased her unexpectedly on Jan. 6, 1976.

Mrs. Warner was a pioneering professional woman, first assisting her husband, a mechanical engineer, in his petroleum handling equipment business. In 1960 she became the first woman on the East Coast to manage a Montgomery Ward Catalog Store, which was located in West Chester, Pa. She remained there until 1970 when she obtained her real estate license; following a successful career in real estate she retired from the Charles H. Pusey Agency in Paoli, Pa. and first moved to North Adams, Mass. and then to Vermont. For the last few years she had resided at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington. While working she had been a member of several business and professional organizations and had received numerous awards of recognition. She was known for her artistic ability and her work as a seamstress, she enjoyed reading and keeping current with the latest news. She absolutely loved living in Vermont. She leaves her daughter and beloved son-in-law Vanda N. Warner and Lee F. Peters of Whitingham; her grandchildren Tacy and Howard Lincoln of Essex Junction, Dana and Arnold Coombs of Keene, N.H. and Olga K. Peters of Jacksonville; her great-grandchildren Lucy and Carter Lincoln of Essex Junction and Max and Addison Coombs of Keene, N.H.; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, Ethel Warner of Harrisburg, Pa., Ellen Campbell Eley of Manzanita, Ore., Josephine Warner Cornelius and husband Robert of Harrisburg, Pa. She also leaves her loving family of caregivers at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

There will be no formal funeral services held for Mrs. Warner. Burial will take place in the Warner family lot in Lower Merion Cemetery in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

The family suggests memorial gifts in her memory be made to either the Whitingham School Grants for Grads or the Whitingham Ambulance Service in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
