1923 - 2014 SHAFTSBURY Lina G. Armstrong, 91, widow of Edward G. Armstrong, a resident of Route 67 East, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington. Born in Shaftsbury on Jan. 16, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Arlie and Bessie (Beagle) Greene. For many years Lina made her home with her Aunt Lina and Uncle Voiley Mitchell in North Bennington. She was a 1940 graduate of North Bennington High School and a 1942 graduate of St. Josephs Business College. Lina and Ed were married at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on Sept. 2, 1950. Ed died on Oct. 20, 2012. In earlier years, Lina served as the secretary to the plant manager at National Carbide Company in Bennington for eight years. For 26 years she served as administrative assistant to the late James S. Holden during his terms as both Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and Chief Judge of the U. S. District Court of Vermont. Lina retired at the age of 71. A member of the Bennington Club for many years, she also enjoyed sewing and reading. Survivors include her son, Alan E. Armstrong of Shaftsbury; eight brothers and sisters, Barbara Charron of Shaftsbury, Betty Stratton of Bennington, Arlie F. "Skip" Greene of Bennington, Lowell Greene of North Bennington, Elmer "Dickie" Greene of Bennington, Gale Greene of Glastenbury and Clyde "Sonny" Young Jr. of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Lina was predeceased by seven sisters and brothers, Eleanor Welch, Howard Maxwell, Cecil, Donald, Raymond, Warren and Johnny Greene. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME Monday, Sept. 22, 2014 at 1 p.m. with Chaplin Kenneth Coonradt officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Should friends desire contributions in Lina G. Armstrong's memory may be made to either the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center, the Vermont or ones favorite charity through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
