Linda Rooney Markstein Shaw

1939-2012 On November 21, 2012, Linda Rooney Markstein Shaw, 72, died at her home in New York, N.Y., surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born in Garden City, KS December 14, 1939 to William Tecumseh, Jr and Mamie (Pat) Patton Rooney. Her marriage to Armand Habiby in 1961 ended in divorce. She married Stephen Markstein in 1968 who preceded her in death in 1996. She married Donald Shaw in 1999. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Anne Habiby of Belmont, MA and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Suzanna Rooney Markstein of Brooklyn, NY, two step-daughters, Victoria Shaw-Williamson and husband James Williamson, and Donaly Shaw and husband Bruce Kriegel and her adopted daughter Sangeeta Pratap and husband Todd Keister. She has five grandchildren, Pamela, Oliver, Marcus, Luke and Finn. She is also survived by three brothers, William T. and Anne Rooney of Garden City, KS, Ronald H and Glenda Rooney of Minneapolis, MN, and Stephen P and Cynthia Kaplan Rooney of Upper Montclair, NJ. She was a graduate of Mills College, the University of Kansas and held a doctorate from NOVA Southeastern University. Dr. Markstein was a dedicated teacher who taught at Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY for many years. One of the great privileges of her life was to have been able to teach with people who believed so passionately in the power of education to transform lives. She was a leader in the field of English as a Second Language and her text books sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

A memorial service is planned for the end of January.
