BENNINGTON -- Livingston L. Rice, a resident of Spring Hill Road, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Crescent Manor after a long illness.

He attended Riverdale Country School, Mercersberg Academy and Gettysburg College. Liv married Anna Wood in 1940. Her father had been Liv’s football coach at Riverdale. He remained very close to the Wood family.

During World War II, Mr. Rice worked in aircraft design for Republic and Vultee He was then chief engineer for Groves Corporation, a manufacturer of electrical components. A bout with polio in 1944 didn’t change his indomitable spirit. In 1949, he began work for Sprague Electric Company in North Adams, Mass. As a department manager in engineering, Mr. Rice was greatly respected. Many patents were issued in his name. “Liv” and Anna raised their family of four girls in Williamstown, Mass., where he was active in the community in many ways. He was a member of Rotary and served on the school committee when Mt. Greylock Regional was built. Before moving to Bennington, the Rices lived in Manchester.

”Liv” was a dedicated amateur radio “ham” (W1QOC) from the time he was a teenager. All his life he most enjoyed being outdoors. His “camp” in the Berkshire Hills, chopping wood, canoeing, a plunge in a mountain pond, and a family supper around a campfire under the stars - these were the things that made him happy.

Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Anna, and three daughters, Lynn Rice Lichtig of New York City and West Milford, N.J., Ruby “Pip” Rice of Colrain, Mass. and Patty Esden of Fairfield. A daughter, JoAnn Lee Rice, of Bennington, died in 2002.
