Obituary Condolences

SUNDERLAND -- Lois E. Bahan, 62, a resident of Shady Pines Road in Sunderland, died Saturday evening Jan. 6, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington surrounded by her family.

She was born in Bennington on Oct. 16, 1944, the daughter of Kenneth Leroy and Eleanor Marie (Short) Martin and raised in later years by her second father, Thomas M. Hammond. Lois attended Shaftsbury schools and was a graduate of North Bennington High School, class of 1962. Lois worked as a business manager for Shaftsbury Dental Associates for 15 years and then 12 years for the Dental Office of Richard A. Barbierri in Arlington.

Lois was a member of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church, attended the Pittstown, N.Y., United Methodist Church and was a former member of the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary in Bennington. She loved to bowl and enjoyed photography, knitting, traveling and going to flea markets. Lois was very active as a member of the cancer survivor network and was very proud carrying the torch for the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life. She loved her flower garden and cherished times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren of which she was so proud.

Lois is survived by her husband, Philip, of Sunderland, to whom she married at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church on Oct. 9, 1987; two sons, William J. Elwell and his wife Melissa of Pittstown, N.Y., and Jamie T. Elwell and his wife, Malynda, of North Powna; two daughters, Michele R. Bahan Lampron and her husband, Victor, of Arlington, and Wieska E. Halbur and her husband, Fritter, of Wilmington; her brother, George L. Martin, of Bennington; her special cousin, Duane Short and sister-in-law Laverne Cooper both of Texas; 11 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah Bahan, and her brother, Victor Martin.

Funeral services for Lois will be held Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church. The Rev. Deborah Estey will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 9 from noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church.
