Lois Hoth Rosencrantz 1915 - 2009 DORSET, VT Lois Barbara Hoth Rosencrantz died, Jan. 30, 2009, at Equinox Terrace in Manchester following a brief illness. Barbara was born on Oct. 6, 1915, in Asbury Park, N.J., daughter of Frederic Hoth and Lois Pett Hoth, and grew up in Leonia, N.J. Her childhood was highlighted by extensive travels throughout the United States with her family, and she enjoyed the distinction of having visited all of the 48 continental states. Barbara attended the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J., graduating magnum cum laude with a BA degree in 1937. After graduation, she taught at St. Elizabeth's, then, upon receiving certification from Patterson Business School in 1938, worked in New York City as a medical secretary. Barbara greatly enjoyed skiing, and spent many winter weekends and holidays in Vermont. She met her future husband, John Rosencrantz, at the Ranch Camp in Stowe during one of these trips. Barbara and John were married in Leonia in February 1943. As an Army wife, Barbara lived and worked at various locations around the country. The couple moved to Manchester in 1945, and in 1948 settled in South Dorset, where Barbara resided for the remainder of her life. Both Barbara and John had a great love for the outdoors and spent much of their free time bicycling, hiking, and skiing, they were familiar faces on the roads to Pawlet and Middletown Springs, at Merck Forest Foundation, and on the slopes of Bromley. Barbara was an avid reader and after John retired, was assistant to the librarian at the Dorset Library. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America, and served on the board of the Dorset Nursing Association. Barbara was predeceased by her husband John Rosencrantz and her son Stephen Rosencrantz. She leaves her brother Frederic Dunstan Hoth of Bennington, her son; Eric Rosencrantz of Dorset, her daughters; Christine Pratt of Wickford, R.I., Anita Rosencrantz of South Berwick, Maine, Antonia Harkins of Arlington; her daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Rosencrantz of Essex Junction; and her grandchildren, Michael Rosencrantz of Jackson Heights, N.Y., Andrea Rosencrantz of Essex Junction, Susanna Pratt of Phoenix, Ariz., Fletcher Pratt of Oberlin, Ohio, Kate Harkins of South Dorset, Natt Harkins of Olympia, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial celebration will be held in the springtime.
