Lorraine G. Birk 1928-2011 BENNINGTON Lorraine G. Birk, 83, a 45 year resident of Bennington passed away in Bennington on November 28, 2011. Lorraine was born in Newark, New Jersey July 20, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Rose (Langone) Gentile. Lorraine received her baccalaureate degree from Syracuse University and her master's degree from North Adams State College. Mrs. Birk moved to Bennington with her husband Wally and three children, Carla, John and Lorelei in 1966. Lorraine is well known in the Bennington community for her many years of service at Mount Anthony Union High School where she was a guidance counselor from 1969 to her retirement in 1995. Lorraine continued her service to the community through the years by serving on Bennington County's Diversion Board, was a board member of the Putnam School of Licensed Practical Nursing and volunteered at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland. Lorraine was also active in the Vermont Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Birk is survived by her husband Wally of 60 years of Bennington, her three children, Carla Cadiz and her husband David of Norwood, Mass., Dr. John Birk and his wife Joann of West Hartford, Conn. and Lorelei Birk of Great Neck, New York. Four grandchildren, Nathaniel and Brittany Cadiz of Norwood, Mass. and John Birk Jr. and Mia Bella Birk of West Hartford, Conn.. A nephew and three nieces. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Rose Cavico and Marie McKenna and a brother, Ralph Gentile Funeral services will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Lorraine Birk's memory may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT. 05201.
