Lorraine J. Cross

1928 - 2014 WHITE CREEK, N.Y. Lorraine J. Cross, 85, wife of Merton J. Cross Sr., a resident of White Creek died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born in New Bedford, Mass., on Aug. 4, 1928, was the daughter of Frederick and Idella (Boulet) Johnson. They moved to Bennington when she was a month old. She received her education at Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of Bennington High School Class of 1945. Lorraine was employed for many years in the business office at the then Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington. She also worked for a while at New England Tel and Tel. At the time of her retirement, she was doing daycare, mostly grandchildren Mrs. Cross was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic in North Bennington; a member of Saint Anne's Society, the Bennington Moose Club and the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary. Lorraine and Merton were married Sept. 14, 1947, at the Sacred Heart Rectory. Survivors, besides her husband, include six daughters and four sons, Anita(Richard) Greene of Shaftsbury, Christine Morrissey of Shaftsbury, Linda(Richard) Grogan of Dingman's Ferry, Pa., Priscilla (Michael) Hanselman and Jean Bohmer of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Margaret (David) Groben of White Creek, Merton, Jr.(Sheryl) Cross of White Creek, Thomas (Linda) Cross of Oak Harbour, Wash., Keith (Kelly) Cross of Pownal, and Wayne (Karen) Cross of Dallas, Ga., 29 grandchildren and 40 plus great grandchildren; a sister, Doris (Ron) Alderman of Bennington, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Johnson; two grandchildren, Thomas Cross and David Groben II,; a great-grandchild, Grace Hanselman and a son-in-law, Bob Morrissey. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery If friends desire, contributions in memory of Lorraine J. Cross may be made to either, Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Sacred Heart School, the White Creek Fire Dept or the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
