NORTH BENNINGTON -- Lorraine T. Smith, 82, a resident of Water Street in North Bennington, died on Thursday morning, April 3, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in North Bennington, and was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Elmira M. (Woodward) Main. She received her education in local schools. In 1944, she married Walter J. Smith. Mr. Smith died on August 19, 1998.

Over the years, Mrs. Smith has been employed at the former Keough Brothers, Union-Carbide, Thompson Mill and Benmont Paper Company. Mrs. Smith was a very active member of the Bennington AARP chapter, and is a Past President and Past Vice President, and had served on several committees. Mrs. Smith also was a member of the West Shaftsbury Homemakers Club, where she also is a Past President and Past Vice President.

She loved going to the Bennington Project Independence and taking part in their activities. She enjoyed playing cards with friends. Mrs. Smith is a long time member of the Church of God on East Road. She is survived by two sons; Kenneth Smith of West Charlton, N.Y. and Walter J. Smith Jr. of Petersburg, N.Y. She also has three daughters; Elmira Gonet of Ocala, Fla., Helen Ann Hayes of Bennington, and Dawn I. Bickman of Fort Pierce, Fla. And one sister Loretta Loveland of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., a half-sister Lucille Senecal of Hoosick, N.Y. and a half-brother, Billy Main of Hoosick, N.Y. Also there are 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, afternoon, April 5, at 1 p.m. at the Church of God on East Road in Bennington with the Reverend Philip Garippa officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Hinsdillville Cemetery in Bennington. There are no calling hours scheduled.
