NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Louis John Davis, 84, of Bracewell Avenue, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at Williamstown Commons, following a long illness.

He was born in North Adams, on Oct. 29, 1918 a son of the late John D. Davis and Rhoda (Rizk) Davis. He received his education in North Adams schools and graduated from St. Joseph High School in North Adams in the class of 1937.

He was employed with the former Gale Shoe Company on Brown Street, and later was a machinist’s apprentice at the outbreak of World War II.

He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 19, 1942 and was a teletype operator and cryptographer with the 86th Station Complement Squadron. He served as a corporal in the Battles of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, and the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Medal for his service.

Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 7, 1945, he returned to North Adams and operated a bakery in Bethel, Conn. with his late brother George Davis. Later, he was in partnership with his sister Helen in the operation of the former Helen’s Diner in North Adams until 1953.

He was last employed as a foreman with the Power Transformer Division of the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Mass. until his retirement in 1972 with more than 19 years of service to the company.

He was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church of North Adams and a member and soloist in the St. Francis Senior Choir for more than 25 years. He also was a longtime member of the Lebanese-American Social Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in North Adams.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Shirley A. David, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1953 and three daughters; Judith Ann Davis of North Adams; Susan Mary Davis of Shrewsbury, Mass.; Barbara L. Davis-Hassan and her husband Kenneth Hassan of Lanesboro, Mass. and two sons Robert A. Davis and his wife Pauline (Gertje) Davis of North Adams and James Davis and his wife Vicki (Agan) Davis of Elmira, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren; Angela Davis, Melissa Davis and Matthew Davis of North Adams, James J. Davis, Michael Davis, Mallory Davis and Joseph Davis, of Elmira, N.Y. and one sister Krimi Kahwaji of Bennington, Vt.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

A sister, Helen Garner, and a brother, George Davis, are deceased.

Funeral services will take place Monday, April 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass. followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Eagle Street, North Adams.

Burial will follow in the family plot at Southview Cemetery, North Adams.
