Obituary Condolences

ATHENS, GREECE -- Louis Panos, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Panos of North Bennington, passed away Nov. 20 in Athens.

Louis was a graduate of North Bennington High School, St. Joseph Business College and attended Bennington College. He received his bachelor’s degree from Iona College and held a master’s degree in humanities.

During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Air Force and upon returning to civilian life, he pursued his great love for music, with an interest in woodwinds. He was an accomplished clarinetist and gave private lessons in oboe, flute, clarinet and recorder. He joined the faculty at the Barlow School in Amenia, N.Y., where he spent 13 years as director of music and instructor of ancient history. Throughout the years he also performed with several chamber music groups. He became a staff member at the Sheffield School and Millbrook School, where he continued his instruction in music.

He and his wife, Helen, took up residence in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he accepted a position in the music department at Anatolia College. He also served as student counselor. Louis was loved by his many students and his peers. He took great pride in seeing his students pursue their interests in music. He was well known for his warm and unique sense of humor and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters, Orania and Stavroula; three sisters, Chrisafula Andriopoulos of Lynn, Mass., Penelope Kouchalakos and Antonia Ceccio, both of Miami; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held in Athens.
