BENNINGTON -- Mr. Louis J. Perrotta, 89, a resident of Pine Road Bennington, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.

He was born in Bennington, April 25, 1917. He was the son of the late Nicolo and Antonetta (Casanetti) Perrotta. Louis graduated from Bennington High School and received a bachelors degree from Ithaca College where he was an outstanding football player.

Louis’s first teaching position was at Woodstock High School. He was soon drafted into the United States Army and because of the declaration of World War II Louis spent five years in the service most of the time in the Phillipines. After being discharged from the service Louis married the former Frances Proud on Aug. 16, 1947, at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Louis and Frances then moved to Lakeland, Fla., where they owned and operated a restaurant. Later, Louis taught and coached at Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, where his basketball team won their first state championship. This was followed by teaching at Bennington Catholic High School while earning a masters eegree at Siena College. Before retiring he was director of guidance at Drury High School in North Adams, Mass.

Mr. Perrotta served for a number of years as a member of the Bennington School Board. He was also a life member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks and a member the Knights of Columbus Council 307 in Bennington.

Survivors include his wife, Frances P. Perrotta, of Bennington; two sisters, Isabella Erickson of Springfield, and Marion Charest of Bennington; two nieces, Joan Perrotta of Bennington and Gloria Walker of Vero Beach, Fla,; three nephews Maxie and Chris Perrotta and Nicholas Charest all of Bennington. He was pre-deceased by a brotherm Virginio “Max” Perrottam who died July 3, 2004.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, from 1 to 3 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.
