Louis W. Haviland 1906-2008 HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. - Louis W. Haviland, 101, died Wednesday Feb. 20 at Hoosick Falls Health Center where he had resided for several years. Lou was born on July 16, 1906 in Elizabeth, New Jersey son of Freeman and Freida Schmohl Haviland. He received his education in Elizabeth and New York University. Lou worked for the Morey Larue Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company in Elizabeth for fifty years, retiring in 1975. At the time of his retirement he served as the Vice President of the company. Following his retirement he moved to Hoosick Falls. While in New Jersey Lou was very active serving as the President of the Elizabeth Kiwanis Club in 1950 and 1973. He also was the President of the Elizabeth Industrial Management Club, Salvation Army Advisory Board Chairman, member of the Elizabeth Elks, new Jersey Industrial Editor's Association and the Eastern Union County Chamber of Commerce. In the laundry and dry cleaning industry he was President of the Varsity International Conference of Dry Cleaners. President of the laundry and cleaners round table, director of the New Jersey Laundry and Dry Cleaning Institute. Member of the Institute of Industrial laundering and a member of the International Fabric Care Institutes, representing the laundry and dry cleaning industry in the New York City apparel trades. After moving to Hoosick Falls, Lou was also active in the community joining the Kiwanis Club, Elks, Salvation Army and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was predeceased by two wives, his first, Alice Schneski Haviland, and his second, Rose Lorete Haviland. His only daughter, Mary Lou Haviland Davendonis, died in 2003. Mary Lou was married to Anthony Davendonis of Hoosick Falls and had two children, Gregg Davendonis and Jill Davendonis, who both live in South Carolina. Jill is married to Bob Marks and together have a daughter Rachel Marks. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. from MAHAR FUNERAL HOME, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6 p.m. until the start of the service. Memorial contributions maybe made to the Karen McGovern Memorial Fund through the funeral home.]]>
