Loyal W. Winters

1933 -2014 SUNDERLAND Loyal W. Winters, 80, a longtime resident of Sunderland Hill Road, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, in Bennington, following a brief illness. The son of the late John and Elizabeth (Harrigan) Winters, he was born in Whitehall, N.Y., on Dec. 18, 1933. He grew up in Whitehall where he graduated high school in 1951. He was a Korean War Veteran where he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Waller. Loyal had worked for the US Postal Service in Pawling, N.Y., and 20 years as a Corrections Officer at Bedford Hills and Sing Sing Correctional Facilities in New York, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was a member of American Legion Post 69, was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed a good game of cards. He will be remembered for his sharp and quick wit and great sense of humor. He was known to favor the ladies with his humor. Loyal leaves his loving companion of 24 years, Janice Hill-Gould; her children, Stephanie Sowatzka of Florida and Todd Gould of North Carolina, and grandchildren, Rebecca Sallisky and Kari Gould. Loyal's family: son, Michael Winters and Linda White of Putnam Valley, N.Y.; daughters, Loyal Ann and husband, Charles West, of Queensbury, N.Y., Gina Mesnick of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Michelle Froman of Albany, N.Y.; brothers, Russell Winters of Mission, Texas; sisters, Jeanne Mach of North Bennington and Marie White of Mission, Texas; grandchildren, Shawn West, Joel Maillet Christopher Froman, Natasha and Alex Winters, great-grandchildren, Vincent West and Natalie Maillet, and nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Friday June 27 at 1 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the HANSON WALBRIDGE SHEA FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Claire North officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Ira Allen Cemetery. Following the burial services, there will be a memorial reception at Chauncy's Restaurant from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to American Legion Post 69 in care of the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, P.O.
