SHAFTSBURY -- Miss Lula A. Percey, 92, a resident of Cleveland Avenue in Shaftsbury, died on Monday afternoon, May 17, 2004 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Miss Percey was born on June 12, 1911 in Bennington, the daughter of William J. and Bessie (Lake) Percey. Her early years were spent in Bennington and she attended the Castleton Normal School to receive training as a teacher. Miss Percey taught school for more than 50 years of her life, much of her time as a rural school teacher in one-room schools. Her first teaching assignment was in the Varney School in Pownal. She later taught in Saxtons River, the Brooklyn District of Bennington, the North Bennington Elementary School and other schools in Vermont and Massachusetts, including as an art teacher in the North Adams,Mass. schools. In later years, Miss Percey resided in Marlboro, Mass. and returned to the area in 1999 to reside in Shaftsbury. Miss Percey attended the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church and especially enjoyed flower gardening and art work.

Miss Percey is survived by a brother, Philip Percey of North Bennington; a sister, Mrs. Phyllis Percey Bronson of Shaftsbury; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Miss Percey was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph Percey and Bradford T. Percey, and a sister, B. Lydia Anderson.

Funeral services for Miss Percey will be held on Thursday, May 20 at 10 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Percey family lot at the Hinsdillville Cemetery in North Bennington. There are no calling hours planned.
