Lyle H. Salter
1928-2010 ROCKINGHAM, VT Lyle H. Salter of Rockingham, and a former longtime resident of East Arlington, died on May 28, 2010, at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Vt.
Born at Springfield Memorial Hospital on July 6, 1928, the son of W. Warren Salter and Mina Lafayette Salter, he graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School in Concord, Mass., and earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Vermont.
He served in the Navy for four years as a Radio Communications Technician.
Lyle married Ruth Clark on Dec. 27, 1950, at the Federated Church in East Arlington. They lived in Burlington, Vt., Waverly, N.Y., and Warwick, R.I.
Lyle trained with the Grand Union Management program and was general manager of Grand Unions in Oneonta and Watertown, N.Y. In 1964, he and his wife purchased Clark's IGA in East Arlington, and returned to Vermont. Lyle operated the store until his retirement in 1990.
Lyle was an active member of the East Arlington Federated Church where he served on numerous committees. He was in the Arlington Fire Department for ten years. Lyle was a member of the Arlington Lions Club and Snowmobile Club. He participated enthusiastically in the Martha Canfield Library Bridge Club.
He loved to hunt and fish, golf, camp with his family, play bridge, and travel. He led an active life with concern and care for community members, although his primary focus was on his immediate and extended family.
Lyle leaves his wife, Ruth, of Rockingham; a daughter, Wanda Salter and her husband, Todd Roy, also of Rockingham; a brother, Sterling Salter of Glens Falls, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Alice and Timothy Salter-Roy; fifteen nieces, and thirteen nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved daughters, Cheryl Alice and Shelley Louise Salter, and his siblings, Winston and Fenwick Salter and Myrna Salter Martin.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington. A graveside service with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington. There will be no calling hours.
