Mabel M. Elwell

1924-2012 BENNINGTON Mabel M. Elwell, 88, widow of Asa Elwell, a resident of East Road, died peacefully Monday, November 26, 2012 at her residence following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on January 25, 1924 in Shaftsbury, she was the daughter of the late Harold Harrington and Birdella (Bump) Harrington. Mabel received her education in the Shaftsbury and Bennington schools.

Mabel and Asa were married at the White Chapel Church in Bennington on April 7, 1940. Asa died January 6, 2006.

In earlier years Mabel was employed at the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington.

For many years she served as both the secretary and treasurer for both the Pittstown Beagle Club and the Hale Mountain Fish & Game Club. For over 50 years Mabel had been active with her late husband in the operation of Elwell Beagle Sales. At the time of her death she was serving as the president of the White Chapel Society. She will be remembered in the community for her famous apple pies and baked beans.

Mabel enjoyed deer hunting, her camp in Landgrove, snowmobiling, going to beagle trials, holidays and family gatherings and any special event. She always loved time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known affectionately to them as "Honey" and "Little Great Granny".

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Joseph Sausville of Bennington; three granddaughters and their husbands, Beth and Michael Welch, Lynn and Michael Andrews and Betsy and Michael Madison; four great-grandchildren, Megan Alice Andrews, Michael Alan Andrews III, Camden Asa Madison and Kendal Ashlyn Madison, all of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mabel was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Solomon Harrington.

The funeral will be held at the White Chapel Church on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Nancy Wright officiating.

Friends may call at the White Chapel on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Mabel Elwell's memory may be made to the White Chapel Society through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
