BENNINGTON -- Mabel Sophia Davis, 93, a former longtime resident of Hunt Street died Thursday evening May 8, 2003 at the Crescent Manor Care Centers where she had resided for the past few years.

Miss Davis was born in Landgrove on March 17, 1910, she was the daughter of Charles L. and Nancy (Harmon) Davis. She grew up on the family farm in Pownal and had attended the Maple Grove Schoolhouse. After school hours she did janitorial work in the schoolhouse, performing many tasks including cleaning and keeping the stoves full of wood to heat the building. Miss Davis had worked at the former Ben-Mont Paper Company for 49 years from which she retired. She was a longtime member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, she thoroughly enjoyed spending time at the camp in Woodford Hollow, traveling to the beach, especially Hampton Beach and Rye Beach both in New Hampshire and her involvement in the family picnic. She liked to keep busy and especially liked doing outside yard work at her home which she shared for many years with her longtime companion, the late Alyce Baker.

She leaves one sister Mrs. Albert (Clara) Van of Bennington and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. In addition to her companion Alyce Baker she was predeceased by three brothers Walter, Lewis and Oran Davis, two sisters Etta Goodwin and Cora Betit who died Aug. 31, 2001. The burial office and committal for Miss Mabel S. Davis will be held on Monday May 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the Davis family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. when the family will be present.
