NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Mr. Macy Cookis, 66, of Brooklyn Street, died Friday morning, Dec. 30, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt., after a long illness, surrounded by his family.

He was born in North Adams on Nov. 3, 1939, a son of the late Samuel U. Cookis and Ruth (Weiner) Cookis. He attended schools in North Adams and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1959.

Mr. Cookis was first employed at the Mohawk Theater in North Adams. He also worked at Sprague Electric Co. for a short time. He then was employed at the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Store, where he completed a management training course. Mr. Cookis was then employed as assistant manager at Rudolph Jewelers on Main St. for several years.

Mr. Cookis then joined the Cornish Wire in Williamstown, which later became the General Cable Co. in North Adams, where he also served as a union steward. He worked at the former Commonwealth Sprague for a short time. He was last employed by Cordmaster on Curran Highway, until his retirement in December 2001.

Mr. Cookis competed in boxing in his youth and also enjoyed fishing. He was a former member of the North Adams Sportsmans Club. He competed in field trials with his father in law, George Brown. He loved the outdoors in Vermont.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who mostly enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife, the former Eleanor Brown, whom he married on April 22, 1961, in St. Francis Church; two daughters, Hope A. Cookis-McCarthy of Bennington, Vt., and Holly J. Michaelson of Delmar, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Erika McCarthy, 7, and Thomas McCarthy, 4, of Bennington; one sister, Riva Freelander of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one brother, Julius “Joe” Cookis of North Adams; and nieces and nephews.

His daughter, Lynn Marie Cookis, died May 28, 1991. A brother, Herbert Cookis, died Dec. 12, 2000.

Funeral services for Macy Cookis will take place Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with Rabbi Jeffrey Goldwasser, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Southview cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the family or to Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center Patient Resource Fund in care of the funeral home.
