GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- Sister Magdaline Oliver, 83, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at the Mercy Care Life Center in Guilderland, where she had been a resident for several months.

Born April 3, 1919, in Manhattan, she was the daughter of William H. and Anna Horn.

Sister Magdaline was a graduate of Catholic High School and Hunter College, both in New York City. She continued her education at the Norwalk Business School, in Norwalk, Conn. and later taught at the school.

She was the executive secretary to the president of Caldor, Inc. In 1975, Sister Magdaline joined the New Skete Monastery in Cambridge. One of her contributions was starting the world-famous Nuns of New Skete Cheesecakes. She was an avid reader and dessert maker.

Survivors include four children, Simeon Oliver of Greenwood, S.C., Lyn DeTroy of Norwalk, Conn., Ken Oliver of South Salem, N.Y. and Betsi Cole of New Milford, Conn.; a sister and her husband, Ann and Len Brown of Emerson, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and all her brothers and sisters at New Skete.

Calling hours for friends and family will be today March 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holy Wisdom Church at the New Skete Monastery, Ash Grove Road, Cambridge.

There will be a vigil service at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19.

The funeral liturgy will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20 with burial following at the New Skete Monastery Cemetery.
