Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Margaret B. “Peggy” Maclay, 90, a longtime resident of Monument Avenue, died Friday morning, June 25, 2004 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.

Mrs. Maclay was born in Shaftsbury on Oct. 26, 1913, the daughter of the late Harry P. and Margaret E. (Quinn) Browe. She grew up in Shaftsbury where she attended local schools. She was married to James B. Maclay on June 27, 1936; he died June 7, 1988. For many years she had owned and operated Peggy Maclay’s Beauty Shop in Bennington. She continued hair styling into her early 80s; when her health began to fail she retired. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, a life member of the Red Mountain Lodge Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of The Bennington Club. Mrs. Maclay enjoyed the family camp in Pownal as well as gardening, cooking and boating on Lake Champlain.

She leaves her nieces and nephews, Cynthia Colvin of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Jo-anne Holiday of Marysville, Ohio, Bruce Carroll of Saugus, Calif., Roderick Maclay of South Strafford, Thomas Maclay of Marshfield, Jessie Maclay of Orwell and James Maclay of Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Mary Percey of Bennington. She was predeceased by a sister, Clara Charbonneau, and brothers Lawrence and Howard Browe.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of The First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Maclay family lot in Grandview Cemetery in Shaftsbury. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Friday morning from 9 to 11 a.m., when the family will be present. Gifts in memory of Mrs. Maclay may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or Bennington Area Special Olympics in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, VT 05201.
