Obituary Condolences

WILMINGTON -- Margaret Eleanor Greene, 87, a resident of Whitney Lane, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 15, 2004, following a lengthy illness at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Mrs. Greene was born in Wilmington on June 17, 1917; she was the daughter of the late Leon R. and Belle (Eames) Covey. She grew up in Wilmington, where she attended local schools. Following her graduation from Wilmington High School, she continued her education at Castleton Normal School, where she obtained her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in East Dover. She then taught at the Cold Brook Schoolhouse in Wilmington, which was also a one-room schoolhouse. For many years she had taught elementary education at the Wilmington School, grades three and five. Mrs. Greene had served as the assistant librarian at the Pettee Memorial Library, eventually becoming the librarian and continuing to serve many more years. She was married to H. Kendrick Greene on June 15, 1939; together they built their present home on Whitney Lane. She was a member of the Mayflower Chapter 19 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former member of the Wilmington Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the church choir; for the past several years she has been a member of the Wilmington Baptist Church, where she was a member of the women’s association and Sunday school teacher.

Mrs. Greene is regarded as the Wilmington historian, documenting all burials in the many town-owned cemeteries, compiling the genealogy of local families and documenting historical homes and buildings of the area. Her work in this capacity has been a considerable asset to the Wilmington Historical Society and many others throughout the years. She loved to be around people and took great pleasure in teaching children; when her sons were in Little League she would always be the first one to load up the car with players and head out to the game. She enjoyed reading and cooking, especially for her family, and was a Boston Red Sox fan.

She leaves her husband of 65 years, H. Kendrick Greene of Wilmington; her sons and their wives, David and Laurie Greene of Auburn, N.H. and Donald and Claudia Greene of Whitingham; her brother, Robert Covey Sr. of Wilmington; a sister, Elizabeth Cobb of Brattleboro; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins; and friends in Long Island. She was predeceased by her son Douglas Greene, who died in 1956.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Wilmington Baptist Church, with the Rev. L. Douglas LaPlante officiating. Burial will follow in the Greene family lot in Riverview Cemetery. A time of fellowship and refreshment will follow the committal services in the church vestry hosted by the ladies of the church. Friends may call at the Covey & Allen Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., when the family will be present.

Memorial gifts may be made to either the Wilmington Baptist Church or Shriners Children’s Hospitals in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
