Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Margaret I. “Maggie” Shepard, 86, a resident of West Main Street, where she lived from the time she was 6 months old, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington Aug. 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Isabella (Carson) Small. She received her education in the Bennington schools and was a 1938 graduate of Bennington High School. While in high school, she was a member of the Glee Club, where she was often the lead for many of the shows.

Following high school, she studied opera in New York City. During World War II, Maggie traveled with the USO to entertain troops throughout the South Pacific. She also appeared with her sister Janet on the Fred Allen Amateur Hour and on the Ted Lewis Show in New Orleans. For many years Maggie was a professional singer, having performed throughout the United States. In the 1970s Maggie returned to Bennington, where she was employed at Putnam Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 1984.

She enjoyed needlepoint, jigsaw and crossword puzzles and traveling.

Survivors include a sister, Janet E. Small of Concord, N.H.; two cousins, MaryEllen Ustico of Canaan, Conn., and Cecelia (Small) Kaye of Great Barrington, Mass. She was predeceased by a brother, J. Carson Small.

A service to celebrate the life of Margaret I. “Maggie” Shepard will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Friday, June 30, 2006 at 1 p.m.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Friday from noon until the time of the service.
