Margaret Y. Riley 1922-2011 Margaret Y. Riley, 89, passed away to the Lord on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at home with her family at her side. She was born in Bennington, August 25, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Clara (Ratelle) of Canada and Rockwell Lyons of Connecticut. She received her education in Bennington. After World War II she was married to Robert Stratton in 1944. Mr. Stratton died in 1966. For a portion of that time she worked at the Eagle Square in Shaftsbury. Later she was married to the late Franklin Riley. In her mid life, Mrs. Riley was the first local coordinator of the Office of Economic Opportunity and the first local coordinator of R.S.V.P. She was a great friend of Bill W. and achieved 48 years of continuous sobriety. Thru her life's work she has positively touched many lives and guided many on their road to spiritual recovery from addiction, not only with her understanding and words, but also with her example. She enjoyed swimming and tennis when younger and reading and playing bridge. She traveled to Europe and loved the art museums. She also enjoyed time with her family and friends. She is predeceased by her daughter, Janet Morehouse, and two sons, Donald Stratton and Mark Stratton. Survivors include her son, Ronald Stratton, and a daughter, Marlene Sauer. Also survived by her grandchildren, Tracey Stratton-Merrow, Smith Stratton, Jr., Celisa Stratton, Jessica Stratton, Mark Stratton and Michael Stratton. Margaret leaves three great grandchildren; Troy, Mark III, and Persephone Stratton. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be held on Monday, September 12, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Interment will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington. At the request of Mrs. Riley there will be no calling hours. If friends desire contributions in memory of Mrs. Riley may be made to the Turning Point Club in Bennington through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
