Margaret Smith 1944 - 2008 BENNINGTON Margaret Smith, 64, a resident of Pleasant Street, died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 21, at her home following a long illness. She was born in Bennington on Aug. 4, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Richard and Lucretia Gravel Smith, Sr. She received her education in local schools. Margaret had been employed at the BenMont Paper Company for many years until it closed than she went to work at Mace Home Security Company in Bennington. Margaret enjoyed crocheting, watching game shows on TV, late night movies and doing puzzles. She enjoyed collecting unicorns, knick-knacks and Coca-Cola memorabilia. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the love of her life, especially her youngest grandson, Jimmy, whom she rocked to sleep everyday. She enjoyed telling stories to her family. She greatly missed her husband James Washington who predeceased her. She leaves her children, Beatrice Washington and Raymond Van Epps of Bennington, Annette, and her husband Michael Stanley, of Bennington, her son, Jim, and Beverly Washington, of Bennington, Richard and Kimberly Washington, of Bennington, Donald Marlett of Texas, and her "Daughter in heart" Laurie Califf of Buskirk, N.Y.; her grandchildren; Pamela Zarro, Amber Washington, Jame Washington, Christine Washington, Jimmy Washington, Crystal Washington, Noel Washington, Savannah Stanley, Shawmichael Stanley, Dakotah Stanley, Brittany Ketchum, Jasmine Ketchum, Shelby Ketchum, and Caitlin Doyle, her great-grandchildren; J.J. Killebrew, Christian Hamilton, and Madison Giles. She leaves her brothers and sisters; Robert Smith of Bennington, Mary Lewis of Florida, Linda Salmon of Tennessee, Emily Caron of Bennington, Charles Smith of Bennington, and Michael Smith of Bennington. Margaret is predeceased by one grandson Michael Stanley, one great-granddaughter Lamya Essence Lee, and several brothers and sisters including her sister Rose Collins and brother Francis Smith. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St. in Bennington with Pastor Linda Lebert of the Harvest Christian Ministries, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in White chapel Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dialysis Unit at Southwestern Vermont Health Care through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
