BENNINGTON -- Maria A. Alexander, 92, a former resident of Stonehedge Drive and later the Village at Fillmore Pond, Bennington, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at Crescent Manor Care Center following a period of declining health.

Born in Hoboken, N.J., Aug. 20, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Johanna (Diecke) Donaldson. She received her education in Hoboken and at the age of 18 was called to religious service with the Sisters of Charity. Maria taught elementary school while in the convent but, due to illness she left the community after five years of devoted service as Sister Rita Rose. She married the late David J. Alexander in April 1942 in New Jersey. They subsequently moved to New Hampshire where they owned and managed nursing homes in Newport and Walpole. They eventually settled in Bennington in 1960 and owned and operated Fairview Nursing Home. In 1964 Maria and her husband built Crescent Manor Nursing Home and managed the facility until their retirement in 1978.

Maria had many interests, including horseback riding, painting, knitting and sewing. She made many of her own hats in her early years and enjoyed creating outfits for her children. She was happiest when surrounded by the people she love the most, her children and grandchildren, and when the house was filled to the rafters with people, laughter and love. She remained a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Church and was a member of the St. Anne Society. She also volunteered as a “Grey Lady” at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital.

Maria is survived by her loving family which includes her son, David and his wife, Donna, of Bennington; daughters MaryAnn Ames and her husband, Garry, of, Avon, Ohio, Pattie Alexander and her husband, Doug Hammond, of South Deerfield, Mass., Joan Shaplin and her partner, Bart Feller, of Nashville, Tenn., Jane Alexander and her partner, Steve Lepore, of Greenfield, Mass. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Maria was predeceased by her son, Gerry, and her daughter Clare.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart St. Frances Bell Tower Fund or to a charity of ones choice.
