BENNINGTON -- Marian A. Pierce, 89, widow of Ormal B. Pierce and a longtime resident of Gage Street, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

Born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. on Sept. 25, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Mary (Bangor) Rowe. She received her education in the Hoosick Falls schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce were married Oct. 29, 1932 in Troy, NY. Mr. Pierce died Jan. 19, 1979.

In earlier years Mrs. Pierce had been employed at E Z Mill and Union Carbide Corp. For many years she worked at General Cable Company in North Pownal. Her last employment was as a bakery clerk at the former P & C grocery in Bennington.

Mrs. Pierce was a former member of the executive board of the Vermont State Labor Council and for 17 years she served as secretary/treasurer of the Bennington County Sheriffs Department. For many years she also served as a volunteer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Walter Babcock of North Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Ormal A. and Frances Pierce of Bennington; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Pierce of Bennington; nine grandchildren, Timothy Pierce, Daniel Pierce, Susan Hunt, Maryann Burroughs, Andrew Morgan Jr., Colleen Morgan, Trevor Babcock, Brian Babcock and Kelly Cross; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Myers of Hoosick Falls; her faithful and loving dog, Buddy; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mrs. Pierce was predeceased by a son, John F. Pierce; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Andrew Morgan; a grandson, Michael Pierce; and two brothers, William and Kenneth Rowe.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 16, 2005 at 11 a.m. from St. Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington with the Rev. Canon Robert Miner, rector, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
