Marie Barr 1923-2011 BENNINGTON Marie Barr, 88, a resident of Sarasota, Florida, and formerly of Highland Park, Illinois and Bennington, Vermont, who was born on June 11, 1923, in Budapest, Hungary, died on August 28, 2011 in Sarasota. Marie was the daughter of Alex and Elizabeth Lieberman Lucas of Hamilton, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband Stephen Barr, who died in October 1989; a daughter, Patricia Ann Barr, who died on June 19, 2003; and a sister, Claire Ridker, who died in 2009. In addition to being an active advocate of many social and political causes throughout her life, Marie was also an instrumental part of the founding and operation of Barr Electric Corp, an electrical contracting company in Wheeling, Illinois, formed by her and her late husband, Stephen in the 1970's. Marie was also a member of the Board of Directors of the G-Wiz Science Museum in Sarasota and a former umpire at the U.S. Tennis Open in New York City. Marie's interests ranged from travel, religion, literature and the visual and performing arts to all sports. She was a collector and supporter of many artists, a regular attendee of the Reconstruction Congregations of Sarasota, Florida and Bennington, Vermont, an avid reader of a broad range of American and international writers, a curious traveler and a driven participant and follower of multiple sporting events. With the diligence of a reporting journalist, she could recite baseball, football, tennis and soccer scores and matches with incisive detail and recall. Marie Barr was survived by her daughter, Teri Barr and husband, Charles Stewart,of Oakland, California; her son, Michael Barr and wife, Daria Barr, of Libertyville, Illinois; her son-in-law, Rolf Sternberg, of Bennington, Vermont; five grandchildren, Chloe Barr-Cabanban, Bianca, Barr, Sandor Barr, Tava Sternberg and Shira Sternberg; and her niece Kathryn Peterson and husband, Jim, of Hamilton, Ontario. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at the Plymouth Harbor Chapel, 700 John Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, Florida at 2:30 p.m. A memorial service is to be scheduled at a later date at the convenience of the family in Bennington, Vermont.
