Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Marie Janssen, 94, widow of Walter C. Janssen, a former resident of Cross Street, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.

Born in Shaftsbury Aug. 6, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha (Saunders) Cross. She received her education in the Shaftsbury schools.

Marie was employed at the former Union Carbide Corp. in Bennington for many years.

Mr. Janssen died Oct. 21, 1974.

She was a member of the Gold Star Mothers, VFW Post 1332 Auxiliary, Taconic Grange No. 491 and the Bennington Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Wood of Shaftsbury and Ann Lenahan of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Donald Wood, Dawn Wood King, Deborah Wood Mirallegro, Wendy Wood Bruso, Maureen Malone Thayer, Alison Malone and Paige Jackson Olsen; nine great-grandchildren, Adam and Ryan Wood, Jeremy, Brittany and Johnathan King, Nicholas and Anthony Mirallegro and Kaci and Thomas Bruso; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mrs. Janssen was predeceased by two sons, Donald Malone who was killed in the Korean Conflict on July 10, 1953 and John Malone. She was also predeceased by three sisters and eight brothers, Julia Booth, Effie Mattison, Ella Aleksonis, Burton Cross, Ezekiel Cross Sr., Oscar Cross, Will Cross, Olin Cross, Robert Cross, Earl Cross, and James Cross.

The funeral will be held from the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury on Monday, Oct. 10, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Window Restoration Fund at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday afternoon to conduct services in memory of Marie Janssen: VFW Auxiliary at 4:30 p.m. and Taconic Grange at 5 p.m.
