Marilyn Dean Gardner Obituary
Marilyn Dean (Jenkins) Gardner

1930 - 2016 Marilyn Dean Gardner (Jenkins), 85, formerly of Charlotte, N.C. and Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2016 at her residence at The Greenbriar at The Altamont in Birmingham, AL. She was encircled in support and love by her three daughters: Jeannie, Beth and Eve and families. Mrs. Gardner was the only child born to Bernadena Goodman and Colin Lee Gardner, on May 9th, 1930 in Concord, N.C. An avid writer, poet and devotee of the arts, Mrs. Gardner lived her life with vitality, enthusiasm and passion. She attended Concord schools, graduating Concord High School in 1948. She attended Anderson College in S.C. and UNC-G, formerly Greensboro Woman's College. She was feature literary editor of her college's magazine, newspaper and president of The Players theatrical group and was particularly proud of her screenplay, "Snowbound," which was chosen for production, receiving high acclaim. Mrs. Gardner's professional journey included copywriting for Meyer's Dept. Store in Greensboro, N.C. and Jordan Marsh in Winter Park, FL, and as Executive Sec. for Gold Bond, a division of National Gypsum Co., McAlpine Creek and Marion Diehl Parks in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Gardner had a tremendous work ethic and committed her talent, knowledge and energy with professionalism and integrity. She was an enthusiastic member of the Charlotte Toastmistress Club and loyal supporter of Charlotte's theatre and arts community. It cannot go unmentioned that "Marilyn" was impeccable in her dress and appearance and was seldom seen without a colorful silk scarf, artfully tied and tucked into her suit. Mrs. Gardner was formerly married to Harold Cleveland Jenkins, of Concord, N.C., with whom she had three children and in her view, were perhaps her proudest achievements. She is survived by her daughters: Jeanette "Jeannie" Jenkins and husband, Michael L. Mishkind, PhD., of Bennington, VT, granddaughters, Anne Gardner Mishkind and Darcy Gardner Mishkind, Beth and husband, Charles Wilson Pickelsimer III, of Brevard, N.C. and Delray Beach, FL, grandchildren, Natalie Bryant Pickelsimer and Charles "Wilson" Pickelsimer IV, Eve and husband, William Booth Parker, PhD., of Birmingham, AL, grandchildren, Virginia "Jenny"(Booth) Parker Bivona and husband, Dr. Michael "Jacob" Bivona, John Johnston Parker IV, and Elizabeth Ann "Beth" Parker, great granddaughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Ellie" Bivona. A private service to honor the life and legacy of Marilyn Gardner will be held in the Spring.
