SHAFTSBURY -- Marion W. Becker, 79, wife of Charles O. “Charlie” Becker, a resident of Ledgely Drive, Shaftsbury, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at her residence following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 16, 1927, at the family home in Bennington, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Hattie (Cranston) Wade. She received her education in the Bennington schools and was a 1946 graduate of Bennington High School.

Charlie and Marion were married Aug. 3, 1946, at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington.

In earlier years Marion had been employed at the EZ Mill and at Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington. She later was active with her husband for 17 years in the family business, Becker Fire Equipment until their retirement in 1986.

Together with her husband, Marion was a long-time active supporter of the Shaftsbury Fire Department. She was a charter member and past president of the Shaftsbury Fire Department Auxiliary. In April 2006 the Shaftsbury fire station was renamed the Charles and Marion Becker Fire Facility in honor of the many years of service given to the fire department by the Beckers. She was also a member of both Taconic Grange 491 in Shaftsbury and Pomona Grange for many years and had held several offices in both groups.

Marion also enjoyed camping and crafts.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Charles O. Becker, of Shaftsbury; a nephew and three nieces, Brian Wade and his wife Judy, JoAnn Wade, Robin Wade and Tammy Mattison and her husband Jeff; four great-nephews; a sister-in-law, Lois Wade, of Shaftsbury and several cousins. Marion was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Janet Mattison, Charles Wade and Alfred Wade Jr.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at 1 p.m. with Mother Anita Shell Lambert, rector of St. Peters Episcopal Church officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.

Should friends desire contributions in Marion W. Backer’s memory may be made to either the Shaftsbury Fire Company or the Shaftsbury Fire Company Auxiliary through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT. 05201.

All members of the Taconic Grange will meet Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at 7:15 p.m. and the Shaftsbury Fire Department members are asked to meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home to pay respects to the family of Marion W. Becker.
