Marion Pauline Toomey McCarthy 1911 - 2009 NORTH BENNINGTON Mrs. Marion Pauline (Toomey) McCarthy, 98, died on Friday morning at the Rivers Edge Community Care Home surrounded by her family. She was the third child of Ella Mae Silver and William Edward Toomey, born on March 21, 1911, in Bennington, Vt. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales Academy and Bennington High School and worked in several area businesses. She was married to Bernard "Barney" A. McCarthy at Saint Francis de Sales Church on September 11, 1940. Mr. McCarthy died March 7, 1979. She was active in the Shaftsbury Democratic Party, and was appointed the first female Assistant Side Judge in the State of Vermont by then Governor Phillip Hoof. She was a charter member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church Sodality. Along with her husband, Bernard, she participated in Norshaft Lions Club activities. She leaves three sons, and daughter-in-laws, Bernard W. and Iva McCarthy, Edward and Kathy McCarthy and Dennis and Marcy McCarthy. Her grandchildren, Mark, Kerry, Kara, Megan, Maura, Christina, Timothy, Molly, Padraic, Sarah and Trent. Great-grandchildren, Aidan, Shane, Morgan, Austin, Emily and Kaelyn. Seveal nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. McCarthy was pre-deceased by two brothers, Edward W. Toomey and Charles A. Toomey and a sister Imogene Provensal. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday April 28, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. with a prayer and then from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery, North Bennington. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral on Monday April 27, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of Mrs. McCarthy may be made to Saint John the Baptist Church Sodality through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
