Obituary Condolences

Marjorie K. Kelley BENNINGTON Marjorie K. Kelley, 88, of Duffy Drive in Bennington, passed away peacefully in the company of family at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation on May 6, 2008. Born in Malden, Mass. to parents George Horsman and Katherine MacKenzie Horsman, Marjorie was left fatherless at an early age. She and her mother persevered to maintain a home which became the first American stop for a long line of her mother's Nova Scotia brothers, sisters, and cousins. Marjorie worked for Jordan Marsh, where she met her husband Howard, and at Melrose Savings Bank, where she was a personnel officer until her retirement. Marjorie was an avid golfer and two-time putting champion at Mount Hood Country Club in Melrose, Mass. She acquired an early interest in exercise and nutrition, practicing yoga, swimming laps, and eating healthy. One of her proudest achievements was learning to ride a bicycle as an adult. Her feisty attitude and courageous spirit, traits that sustained her and others throughout her life, were never more in evidence than in her final days. Marjorie devoted many hours to volunteer work at the Bennington Museum, which honored her service with a "Volunteer of the Quarter" award last year. She enjoyed working at the museum shop and took pride in her knowledge of local history and attractions. Marjorie was always available to help out when needed in any capacity. Her friends on the museum staff were among her closest in recent years. Marjorie was a member of what has been called "the greatest generation of Americans," surviving, like others her age, the miseries of the Depression and World War II, and striving to give her family a better life than she had known. Formerly of Malden, Melrose, and Saugus, Mass., Marjorie lived locally with daughter Donna MacKenzie King and son-in-law, David C. King, for the past six years. Marjorie was also the devoted mother of Scott Kelley and his wife, Susan, of Wakefield, Mass. Marjorie was the beloved wife of the late Howard M. Kelley, and was the loving grandmother of Scott Kelley and his wife, Michelle, of Peabody, Mass, and of Joleah MacKenzie and Seth Butler, both of N.H.. Marjorie was predeceased by her granddaughter, SPC Amanda Kelley, this past February. She was also the cherished great-grandmother of Shaelyn and Hannah Kelley. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held at the GATELY FUNERAL HOME in Melrose, Mass., on Friday afternoon from 4 to 6. Funeral services will be at the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m.. Interment will be in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Contributions to the Bennington Museum, or to the Palliative Care Unit at Southwest Vermont Medical Center may be made in lieu of flowers through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
