Marjorie La Rowe

1914 - 2009 BENNINGTON, VT Marjorie Stefan La Rowe, 95, a resident of Pine Circle in Bennington, died on Saturday evening, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

She was born in Chicago Heights, Ill., on May 2, 1914, daughter of Walter Jacob and Ella Hecht Stefan. Marjorie received her education in the Chicago area and is a 1936 graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. Marjorie married Franklin Hewitt La Rowe in New York, N.Y. on Oct. 1, 1937. Mr. La Rowe predeceased her in 1982. The La Rowes moved to Bennington in the late 1970s.

Marjorie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a long time member of the Second Congregational Church in Bennington, where she was active in the Women's Fellowship, the choir, and the reading program. She volunteered at the Bennington Library and the Bennington Museum and supported Oldcastle Theater. Marjorie was a reader for Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic for several decades.

She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed traveling, and was playing golf well into her eighties.

Marjorie leaves two children, Eugene and wife Joan La Rowe of Plymouth, Mass., and Dr. Marjorie La Rowe of Bennington. She leaves four grandchildren, Thomas La Rowe of London, England, James and wife Elizabeth La Rowe of Medfield, Mass., Alexa Hart and husband Ted of Burlington, and Lucas Carter of New York, N.Y. She has two great-grandchildren, Anna and Eva La Rowe, and many nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was predeceased by her brother, Jacob Stefan.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington, with the Rev. Mary Lee-Clark, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family.

At Mrs. LaRowe's request there will be no calling hours.
