BENNINGTON -- Marjorie Oakes Humphrey, 82, a resident of Fillmore Pond died Thursday afternoon July 31 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Humphrey was born in Bennington on Jan, 10, 1921; she was the daughter of Harold and Hazel (Wright) Oakes. She grew up in Galway, N.Y. where she received her education, graduating from high school there. She was married to Harold W. Humphrey in Galway on May 30, 1947. Mr. Humphrey predeceased her on March 3, 1977.

In earlier years, she had worked as a bank teller and for many years she had worked as a bookkeeper at the former Union Carbide Corp., now Eveready Battery, retiring in 1986.

Mrs. Humphrey was a long-time and very active member of The First United Methodist Church of Bennington, a member of the Circle One Group; she also sang in the choir and was a member of the Couples Club. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of Mt. Anthony Chapter 1 Order of the Eastern Star, now Red Mountain Lodge Chapter.

Mrs. Humphrey led a very active social life and was very much a people person making many friends wherever she traveled. She enjoyed the ocean and made several trips to visit friends and relatives in Florida and had spent many vacations in Hawaii for up to two months at a time. In addition to traveling, she enjoyed knitting, reading and was an avid football fan, enjoying both NFL and college games. She was a devoted grandmother to her two grandchildren, Becca and Joe.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Larry Callander, her grandchildren, Rebecca Callander and Joe Callander, all of Bennington; two nephews and four nieces. She was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Oakes, and three sisters, Hazel Stewart, Beulah Garhartt and Thelma Oakes.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Missionary Alliance Church on Wednesday Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin Blue, pastor, and the Rev. Cass Gilbert, sharing the service. Interment will take place in the Humphrey family lot in Old Bennington Centre Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
