Mark J. Stratton Sr. 1954-2008 HOOSICK FALLS, NY Mark Joseph Stratton Sr., 54 years of age who fought his battle with cancer like a true Marine for over 20 years was released into the arms of God and went to join his beloved Linda on Sunday Nov. 9,2008 at Bay State Medical center in Springfield, Mass. Mark was born in Bennington on April 22,1954, he was the son of the late Robert S. Stratton and Margaret Lyons (Stratton ) Riley who survives. He grew up in Bennington where he attended local schools, following his education he entered the United States Marine Corps, in 1972 serving in Thailand with LS6 Delta Nam Pong 3rd Division during the Viet Nam War, he was honorably discharged in 1975 at the rank of Lt Cpl. Mark was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Viet Nam Veterans of America Chapter 601, V.F.W. Post 1332, American Legion Post 13, the Moose Family Center and Eagles Aerie Post #1861 all in Bennington. A longtime member of the National Rifle Association he loved hunting and fishing as well as playing cards with his friends, bowling and cooking. He found serenity in traveling in his car but most of all he enjoyed his family especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as big hearted, generous to a fault and having the patience of a saint. Mark leaves his mother Margaret (Stratton) Riley of Hoosick Falls, sons Mark J. Stratton Jr.and wife Beverly and Michael J. Stratton all of Hoosick Falls, daughters Celisa Ann Stratton and companion Gregg Miner of Westmore, VT and Jessica Ann Stratton of Hoosick Falls, brother Ronald Stratton of Marietta, GA, sister Marlene Sauer and companion Jeffrey Norko of Corinth, NY, special niece Tracey Stratton Merrow of Hoosick Falls, brothers Herbert Stratton of Arlington and Robert Stratton of Bennington, sisters Virginia Berard and Helen Groesbeck of Bennington ,, former wife Sarina DeZinger of Pownal , five grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his father he was predeceased by his wife Linda (Moffitt) Stratton, brother Don Stratton and sisters Ellen Welch and Janet Stratton. FUNERAL NOTICE : Funeral services will be held on Thursday November 13 at 1pm at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, burial with full military honors will follow in the White Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 11am until 1pm. Memorial gifts may be made to the family with checks payable to Marlene Sauer and sent to the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
