Obituary Condolences

NORTH BENNINGTON -- The Liturgy of Christian Burial for Martha A. Morse was celebrated from St. John the Baptist Church on Thursday morning with the Rev. Michael A. DeMasi, former pastor, officiating. Assisting Father DeMasi and serving as crucifer and Acolyte was Merton Snow.

The pall was placed upon Mrs. Morse’s casket by Millie and Larry Harrington, Ted Morse and Lowell Greene. The testament readings were read by granddaughters Sherry Bleau and Bonnie Smith. The offertory gifts were presented to the altar by Ceil Dunham, Leah Smith, Ernest Murray and Melissa King. Music for the Mass was provided by organist Louise Gauthier, who accompanied soloist Mildred Pierce, who sang several of Mrs. Morse’s favorite hymns including, “Amazing Grace,” “Ave Maria,” Here I Am Lord” and “Jesus Remember Me.”

Serving as bearers were grandsons, Scott Bogle, Chris Harrington, Tyler Dunham, Matt Morse, Travis Murray and Jeramie Babson. Honorary bearers, members of St. John’s Ladies Sodality, Betty Becker, Jill Levin, Lorna Cole, Sue Harrington, Lillian McNichol, Margaret Mailhot, Leona Scott, Mae Fox, Betty Riley, Eileen Flynn, Ida Snow and Joyce Scarey formed an honor guard in the church during the processional and recessional.

A prayer service preceded the funeral mass at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Burial took place in the Morse family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with Father DeMasi offering the committal prayers. A memorial reception, hosted by the ladies sodality was held in the parish hall following the graveside services.

The vigil service was held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Wednesday evening with Father DeMasi officiating. Members of the Shaftsbury Grange, Grace Pacitto, Viola Myers, Ida Snow, Mary Lou Cross, Zeke Cross and Frances Hunt conducted services in memory of Mrs. Morse.

Mrs. Morse, 91, a resident of School Street in Bennington, died at the Vermont Veterans Home on Dec. 4.

Arrangements were under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
