BENNINGTON -- Martha D. Sweet, 77, a well known and respected florist in Bennington, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., July 5, 1930. She was the daughter of the late George and Arax (Dicranian) Shearer. Martha received her early education in Pittsfield and was a 1948 graduate of Bennington High School.

She married Clover E. Sweet Jr. on Aug. 29, 1948, at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington

In 1950 Martha and Clover started the family business Marty’s Flower Shop and Greenhouse in North Bennington. In August of 1962, Martha and Clover purchased Moore’s Greenhouse on South Street in Bennington and renamed the business Marty Moore’s Greenhouse.

Martha was a very active member of the Green Mountain Christian Center in Bennington. In earlier years she had a pilot’s license and was a member of the Bennington Flying Club. Her first solo trip was a flight to Burlington. She loved spending time at the ocean and enjoyed going to Hampton Beach. Martha was an accomplished cook and was well known for preparing Armenian foods. She was a tremendous support for many young women in the Bennington community and her door was always open.

Survivors include her husband, Clover E. Sweet Jr. of Bennington, a daughter Marta Wilkinson of Bennington, three grandchildren, Matthew Wilkinson of Bennington, Elizabeth “Liz” Wilkinson of Bennington and Amy Gifford of Bennington; four great grandchildren; a sister, Lucene R. Peirce of Bennington, and several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a son, Everett J. Sweet, who died Sept. 13, 1973.

The funeral will be held from the First United Methodist Church of Bennington on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at 12 p.m. with Pastor John Goyette of the Green Mountain Christian Center officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
