Martha Mildred Daniels

1941 - 2014 BENNINGTON Martha Mildred Mears Daniels, 73, widow of Edward F. "Ted" Daniels, resident of Rutter Road, passed peacefully in her home on the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2014, surrounded by her family. She struggled to fight lung cancer over the past year and kept an optimistic perspective through the entire experience until her final breath. As the matriarch of the family, Martha was a strong and independent woman who, as any mother should, always put the needs and desires of her children and family before her own. Martha was born in Bennington on April 4, 1941, the daughter of the late Albert G. and Mildred M. (Griffis) Mears. A 1959 graduate of North Bennington High School, Martha attended Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont. Martha and Ted were married at St. Francis de Sales Church on Aug. 15, 1959. Edward Daniels passed away on Oct. 10, 1996, of cancer. Martha was employed in the post office and as a switchboard manager at Bennington College. She also worked at Putnam Memorial Hospital, Hale Company, Chittenden Trust Company, Federal Bank and the Bank of Bennington. Until her retirement, Martha worked as an administrative assistant at United Counseling Service. Martha was a member of the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Martha enjoyed trips to casinos and relaxing at the ocean. Reading books, playing cards, and playing on her Kindle were among her favorite pastimes. Martha looked forward to gathering with friends to play dominoes or play a game of cards. In high school, Martha twirled baton and was a part of the majorettes, a joy in her life which she passed on to her granddaughter. She enjoyed the presence of nature and pets, and always spoiled her four-legged friends with treats. Martha's determination and passion for life is a quality that inspired and guided those around her. In her final weeks she was determined to visit the coast in Maine so that she could see the ocean one last time. Not only did this trip fulfill Martha's dream, it also solidified the family's unbreakable bond as their journey with Martha came to a peaceful conclusion. Martha is survived by her children and their spouses, Ricky Daniels of Arlington, Deborah and Brian Gallant of Shaftsbury, Kelly and Paul Maitland of Shaftsbury, and Terri and Dean Hurley of Bennington; seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn Daniels, Christopher Daniels, Brandon Gallant, Karoline Maitland, Adam Maitland, David Leonard, and Kirsten Leonard; four great-grandchildren, Bradley Gallant, Mason Gallant, Cheyenne Leonard and Austin Leonard; two sisters, Janet Daniels of Shaftsbury and Shirley Goodrum of Bennington along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Martha was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Helen Daniels, who passed away June 2, 2014. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington from 2 until 3: p.m. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. in the family lot at St. Columban's Cemetery in Arlington. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary are asked to meet at the funeral at 2:15 to conduct services. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Arlington or Bennington Rescue Squads in memory of Martha Daniels through Mahar & Sons Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.
