Martha A. Rudd 1935-2012 POWNAL Martha Abell Rudd died May 21, 2012. Martha was born October 27, 1935 in Burlington, VT., the daughter of Sabin Clark Abell and Irene (Bates) Abell. She attended Burlington Schools and the University of Vermont. She graduated Cum Laude from North Adams State College in 1966 with Bachelor of Science in Education and received a Master's in Education 1971. She was married to Robert E. Rudd Jr. on February 25, 1956 in Burlington, Vt. Martha served as Tax Collector for the North Pownal School District, and as a Lister for the Town of Pownal. She taught elementary grades in North Pownal in 1966 and Pownal from 1966-68, and in Bennington School District from 1968 to 1969. She was the Guidance Counselor for Mt. Anthony Jr. High School from 1969 to 1974 and from 1978 through 1982. She served as Asst. Principal in 1974 and 1982 and Principal 1982-1987 also at Mt. Anthony Jr. High. She was the Principal of Pownal Elementary School from 1987 to her retirement in1993. Martha established Rudd?s Christmas Tree Farm with her husband Robert E. Rudd, Jr. in 1978 and continued to operate the farm following her husband's death in 1991 with the help of her son Robert and daughter-in-law Mary. She enjoyed working with the trees and was an avid quilter. Martha is survived by her son Robert Edward Rudd and her daughter-in-law Mary Yeager Rudd of Panton, Vt., two brothers Sabin Clark Abell of Vero Beach, Fla., and Mark Lewis Abell of Cambridge, Vt., as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert and a son, Jeffrey Abell Rudd. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at convenience of the family. Hanson Walbridge in Bennington, VT is handling arrangements.
