1929 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Martin L. Harrington, 83, a resident of Buck Hill Road, died peacefully on Monday, April 29, 2013 at his residence.
Born in Bennington on June 22, 1929, he was the son of the late Silas and Doris (Briggs) Harrington. Marty was raised on the family farm on Horton Hill Road and later moved to White Creek, N.Y. when his father purchased the Jermain Hill Farm there. Marty received his early education in a one room school in Shaftsbury and later attended North Bennington High School where he was a member of the Class of 1949. In 1951 he graduated from Vermont Technical College in Randolph.
Marty married the former Mildred Ostrander at the North Bennington Baptist Church on July 28, 1961.
When Marty's father sold the family farm Marty and Millie purchased Harrington's Country Store in Shaftsbury which they operated for 20 years. Following the sale of the store Marty worked with his son to establish Marty's Sporting Goods store in Bennington.
Marty served as the Shaftsbury representative in the Vermont State Legislature for three terms. He was a long time member and Past Master of Tucker Lodge #38, F & AM in North Bennington. In the early 1990's Marty and Millie together established the Southern Vermont Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation where Marty served as chairman for many years.
Marty enjoyed hunting, fishing, meeting people and working with them. His favorite past time was his home and family and working on his property.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Harrington, of Shaftsbury; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Brian Parmenter of Bennington and a son, Martin Harrington of North Bennington; two grandchildren, Chelsea Gilbar and Jared Harrington whom he loved very much; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Raymond Granger of Shaftsbury; a brother-in-law, Malcolm Ware, of Ocala, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Rita Beatty of White Creek, N.Y. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marty was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Ware and two brothers, Ralph and Gerald Harrington.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Martin L. Harrington will be held from the North Bennington Baptist Church on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Jinno, pastor, officiating.
