PETERSBURGH, N.Y. -- Mary A. Hilgenberg Caverly, 81, of Star Ridge, died on Thursday, March 31, 2005, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in New Hartford on Jan. 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Kelly Hilgenberg. She was the loving wife of Joseph M. Caverly. They were married in Geneva on March 31, 1951. They have lived in the Petersburgh area since moving from Katonah in 1991.

Mrs. Caverly graduated from New Hartford High School and Ithaca College in 1945. She was a school teacher at Newark Valley High School and taught physical education and coached at Geneva High School, where she was also a member of the Geneva Youth Bureau. While living in California in the ‘60s and ‘70s, she started a company Creative Leisure. She educated individuals, corporations and the military on leisure and recreation. She was also a recreational therapist in nursing homes in Hill Haven, Calif. Mrs. Caverly was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Berlin.

Survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, Joseph; four children, Patricia Kjeldgaard of Seala, Wash., Joan C. Buzerak of Petersburgh, Robert J. Caverly of Auburn, Calif., James P. Caverly of Manteo, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on April 5 in the Sacred Heart Church, Main Street, Berlin, where the Rev. Kenneth Gregory celebrated a liturgy of Christian death and burial. Interment followed in the Berlin Community Cemetery.
