RUTLAND -- Sister Mary Christine Balargeon (Emma Marie), 96, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 73 years, died on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, in the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Born in Fitzwilliam, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Edna (McClenning) Balargeon.

Sister entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rutland in 1932 from St. Michael’s Parish, Brattleboro. In 2001 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rutland and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, Mass., were reunited.

Sister graduated from Brattleboro High School and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Michael’s College in Winooski.

Sister Mary Christine taught at Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, St. Michael’s High School in Brattleboro and St. Joseph Business School in Bennington. She later served as president of St. Joseph Business College (later St. Joseph College) in Bennington. Sister also served as vice president of the congregation and as treasurer. She retired in Rutland in 2001.

In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her sister, Muriel Bennett of Oakridge, Tenn., a niece and a nephew.

The wake will take place at Immaculate Conception Chapel at Mount St. Joseph Academy on Convent Avenue in Rutland on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, from 10 a.m. to noon, with a prayer service at 10:30 a.m.

The liturgy of Christian burial will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Chapel. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland.
