WEST ARLINGTON -- Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hess, 87, a lifelong resident of West Arlington, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

She was born in Sandgate on March 22, 1918, the daughter of W.O. and Addie (Morey) Wilcox, attended local schools and worked for Norman and Mary Rockwell in West Arlington for many years. Lizzie loved politics, especially local politics. She was a member of the Republican Club and Daughters of American Revolution. She bad a great knowledge of local history that she enjoyed sharing with others. She enjoyed bowling, music, antiques and attending auctions. Lizzie opened her home to family and friends.

She always welcomed new residents to West Arlington and enjoyed doing good deeds for others and giving a helping hand. Most of all she cherished times spent with her family.

She was very active in following her grandchildren and other relatives in local school sports

She is survived by two sons; Alan Hess and Michael Hess of Arlington, two daughters, Mary Johnson and her husband Ken of North Bennington and Patricia Zimmermann and her husband Harold of Fairhope, Ala.; her sister Clara Edgerton of North Bennington; her sister-in-law Lillian Hall of Arlington; 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrie Hess, who died July 11, 1994; five brothers, Orin, Cecil, James, Kenneth and Carrol Wilcox; and four sisters, Nina Crandall, Elva Morrison, Annis Heaney and Doris Nordendahl.

Funeral services for Lizzie will be held Monday, Oct.17, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel on The Green in West Arlington. The Rev. Richard Gratz will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in West Arlington Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. For those who wish, contributions in Lizzie’s memory may be made to the Chapel On The Green or the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation Activities Fund, c/o Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel, P.O.
