Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Mary E. Walsh, 73, a resident of Austin Hill Road in Bennington, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at her residence surrounded by her loving family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. Feb. 14, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Julius and Marion (Porter) Fries. Mary received her education in Rockaway and was a graduate of Rockaway High School. She later attended the Washington School for Secretaries in Manhattan, N. Y.

She married Michael G. Walsh Oct. 5, 1957 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Belle Harbor, N.Y.

In earlier years Mary was employed as a secretary at a chemical company in Rockefeller Plaza. After moving to Bennington, she spent most of her time raising her four children. She later worked at the Quiet Valley Food Coop on North Street in Bennington and for several years at Nichols Department Store in Bennington.

Mary’s home and family were her main interest. She was a member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington where she was a Eucharist minister. Her greatest joy aside from her family was going to the ocean and spending time at the beach.

Survivors include her husband, Michael G. Walsh of Bennington; her children, Michael J. Walsh of Bennington, Robert C Walsh of Rutland, Patricia of Maine and Peter G. Walsh of Colchester; five grandsons, Nolen, Avery, Corbin, Michael and Charles; one step-granddaughter; a sister, Marion Bailey of Baltimore, Md.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a nephew Thomas Bailey.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, March 4, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of the Christian death and burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, March 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., when family will be in attendance.

If friends desire, contributions in memory of Mary E. Walsh may be made to either Hospice of Bennington County, Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church or the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
